Just got back late last night from a super-quick last-minute trip to NYC. I was helping with some logistics of a photoshoot for work. I mostly ran errands in midtown in the rain, but on the way I did manage to take a few picture with my phone, which are below. I had to do a couple of things in Chelsea and I walked along the High Line (my favorite) and enjoyed having it virtually to myself because of the rain. Also managed to meet up with a few friends. The last shot was my view on Wednesday. It’s not pictured but to the right I could just make out the shape of the Statue of of Liberty in the distance.

It’s Friday and I had 3 chocolate chip cookies for breakfast with my coffee (was up early baking them for something at work today) so you know it is going to be a good day (or you know it has been a crazy week and I am dealing with it with chocolate chip cookies. Or both.) Here is a little bit of Florida for your weekend…hope it’s a good one with fresh air and rest!

I feel like I’ve finally found my groove with photographing families. Besides the requisite everyone-smile-at-the-camera portrait, which I am more than happy to do, I know what I’m best at and that is spending time with the family, in a relaxed environment, where everyone feels like themselves (or maybe the best version of themselves) while I calmly try to capture the relationships with my camera (preferably while we all laugh together). And I like it. And I’m confident about it now. That’s sort of funny since I’ve now been shooting for seven or eight years. The last couple of these sessions have taken place mostly in the family’s home or yard and I like that too.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I can see myself doing more of these this year. Anywhere between Orlando and Tampa for the next couple of months, and I can probably do some in southern California when I’m there for the month of July. Now-to this beloved family! These are especially about the latest addition, baby Luke. Last time I photographed them, he was just a cute baby bump. I try to get one of these to leave with them at the end of the photo shoot and it can go right up on the fridge…instant classic:

I was happy to spend some quality time with this kid and her parents a couple weekends ago. She was showing so much independence and creativity. It did my heart good to run in some sprinklers with her and watch a few dozen “dolphin shows” that she put on for me. I knew I would love my nieces and nephews but I find I also have plenty of room in my heart to love children of my best friend’s too.

Katie was always that sweet friend who said “If/when I get married, I want you to take my pictures.” I usually brush off when people say stuff like that but she was serious. And I’m glad, because it was a great day and as always, an honor. We started just as the moon was going to sleep and the sun was waking up and it ended in a flurry of good old-fashioned bird seed.

Oh, hello. How is it Wednesday and how is it April?! I have finally made a big leap forward in my MFA project but I didn’t finish a single book in the month of March (although 2 days into April I did finish The Gifts of Imperfection which I highly recommend and will now read again so I am sorry you can’t borrow mine). Here are some instagram images from recently. I really like instagram and, against my better judgement probably, it’s the only social media I use that’s not private (follow me if you want although I take as much pictures of food as the next girl. User name nomadlaura).

Corsage from a wedding (how sweet to honor the photographer like that!) Pictures coming soon. Friday tradition as of late is to get a muffin at a local place before work.

Recently we went through lots of pictures around the time of my grandfather’s funeral. I love these of my dad in high school. My landlord/friend/neighbor’s bikes that we rode the other day!

Here’s a peak at my MFA project. I love sitting down to play the baby grand at my grandmother’s house.

Busy bees at work! From our April issue at Parenting Magazine (the same issue my favorite fashion story they’ve done, so simple and nice! Oh, and also the issue with Jessica Alba on the cover), here is a feature I shot with a nice little on-page credit there (Easter baskets concepted and assembled by lots of creative people I work with)…still learning lots about shooting in a studio. If only my studio lighting teacher could see me now (I think I made a C in that class. I was a super slow learner.)…hi Ms. A!

Since I was doing a favor for a client (ha…client/friend) last night and edited a photo for her quickly, I thought I would go ahead and post a take from this family photo session. You might know these people too–they are dear to my heart and I have been photographing their growing family all along.

This was the 1,207th picture I took on Saturday (but who’s counting) and the weekend was just getting started. Birdseed thrown at the lovely couple, happy friends and family waving so-long. In-between full work weeks at the magazine (Oh and grad school. I should work on that.) I managed to squeeze in a wedding and two family portrait sessions.
